Rainy Day Otaku Tokyo: Ikebukuro and Odaiba

Rain doesn't have to cancel plans. Character shops, indoor theme parks and arcades, sorted by area.

  • Indoors
  • Character shops
  • Indoor play
  • Grouped by area

When rain rolls in mid-trip, outdoor location hunting gets a lot harder ☔ I didn't want a wet day to spoil your trip, so I picked this theme. On days like that, it works well to pick one area and stick to places where you can spend a long time under one roof.

In this guide I've turned two such areas into a day each: Ikebukuro, with its large character shops and indoor theme parks, and Odaiba, where attractions are gathered inside big shopping complexes.

Ikebukuro, part 1: big character shops

Ikebukuro has anime stores that stretch across many floors and large stores that gather official shops for individual titles. Because you can browse for a long time inside a single building, they make a good first stop on a wet day 🐯

Ikebukuro, part 2: indoor parks and a view from above

Between shops, try one of the indoor attractions. There's a walk-through exhibition, a theme park with its own food areas, and an indoor observation deck, so you can keep going whatever the weather.

  • Chiikawa Park

    Sights & experiences · Ikebukuro

An immersive Chiikawa attraction in the Sunshine City Annex, with a walk-through exhibition, a game corner and a shop. You enter from the Sunshine City underpass rather than from street level, which suits a rainy day.

  • Namjatown

    Sights & experiences · Ikebukuro

An indoor theme park run by Bandai Namco that holds anime and game collaborations year-round. With the Gyoza Stadium and dessert food streets inside, you can have your meal here too.

  • SUNSHINE 60 OBSERVATORY TENBOU-PARK

    Sights & experiences

An indoor observation deck on the 60th floor of the Sunshine 60 building. Since it's inside Sunshine City, it's easy to fit in a sweeping view of Tokyo between shops.

Odaiba, part 1: a full day inside DECKS Tokyo Beach

DECKS Tokyo Beach in Odaiba puts an indoor theme park, a hands-on art museum and a floor recreating a retro Japanese street all inside one building. You can move between several stops without stepping outside ✨

Odaiba, part 2: into the world of Gunpla at DiverCity

For the afternoon, let's head to DiverCity Tokyo Plaza. The Gunpla complex inside lets you build the kits you buy right there, the kind of slow, hands-on time that a rainy day is made for.

Good to know

  • A folding umbrella makes the short walks between buildings much easier.
  • Shop entrances often have umbrella bags or stands; using them keeps the floors inside dry.
  • Indoor attractions tend to get busier when it rains. Sticking to one area and spending longer inside each building cuts down on time spent outdoors.
  • Floors near entrances can be wet and slippery, so watch your step.

Two rainy days in Ikebukuro and Odaiba

This is how I'd go around them! Add them all to a trip and change anything you like later 🧳

If the forecast shows rain, add one of these days to your trip as it is, and you'll have a plan ready to go. Let's enjoy the rainy days together 🧳
