Makoto Shinkai's Tokyo: Shinjuku and Around

Your Name., The Garden of Words, 5 Centimeters per Second, Weathering with You: 14 stops, two days.

  • Scenes from the films
  • Walkable
  • Stations on screen

It's Toraco 🐯 Makoto Shinkai's films keep returning to real Tokyo stations, stairways and parks. The scenery feels familiar, yet when you try to visit, it's hard to tell which place belongs to which film, or how far apart they are. So I decided to sort them out for you.

In this feature I've gathered 14 places from four films, all clustered around Yotsuya, Shinjuku and Sangubashi. Because they sit in a fairly small area around Shinjuku, two days on foot and by train is enough to see them at a relaxed pace.

Your Name.: From Yotsuya to the Suga Shrine Steps

A Your Name. walk usually starts at Yotsuya Station, shown as the station nearest Taki's home. From there, the Suga Shrine stairway, the footbridge outside Shinanomachi Station and the gallery at Jingu Gaien link up into one walking route through the film's Tokyo.

The Garden of Words: Shinjuku Gyoen and Sendagaya

The main setting of The Garden of Words is Shinjuku Gyoen. Near its southeast gate is Sendagaya Station, where Yukino stands on the platform. On the garden's north side is the model for the restaurant where Taki works in Your Name., a nice place to end day one.

Shinjuku South Exit and Kabukicho

Shinjuku Station's south exit is the first Tokyo cityscape Mitsuha sees in Your Name. The clock-towered skyscraper nearby is drawn as the emblem of the Shinjuku sky in both Your Name. and The Garden of Words. After dark, head up to Kabukicho for the streets Hodaka drifts through in Weathering with You ✨

5 Centimeters per Second: Sangubashi and Yoyogi Hachiman

The opening of chapter one of 5 Centimeters per Second is set around Sangubashi Station on the Odakyu Line. The station, the park and Yoyogi Hachimangu Shrine can be walked in about an hour, which makes a nice morning stroll before heading back into Shinjuku.
